Downtown Redevelopment

What is redevelopment and why does it matter?

Unlike traditional development, redevelopment is taking already developed land, and making it better for the people, the community, and the tax base!  Parts of downtown Ocala were developed 150 years ago, and despite having infrastructure such as water, sewer, roads, sidewalks…had outlived their usefulness and livability.  Therefore, redevelopment is a service to the community, bringing people, businesses, jobs and income back to an area already zoned and approved for these uses. The site where Boyd developed Watula South Luxury Townhomes was under-utilized for years, generating zero income for the city.  Soon 9 families will call this home and be paying property taxes which help keep Ocala running a safe and inviting downtown that welcomes business and shoppers alike.

Redevelopment is the process of improving an area that is in decline. This can be done through a variety of means, such as cleaning up pollution, demolishing abandoned buildings, and creating new infrastructure. Downtown Ocala Redevelopment offers many benefits for our community, including:

  • Increased property values: Redevelopment can increase the value of properties in the area by making an area more attractive to residents and businesses, which can lead to an increase in demand for housing and commercial space.
  • Improved public safety: Redevelopment can improve public safety by reducing crime and blight. It can also create new opportunities for residents, which can lead to a decrease in poverty and unemployment.
  • Increased economic activity: Redevelopment can increase economic activity in the area by attracting new businesses and residents. This is because redevelopment can make an area more attractive to businesses, and it can also create new jobs for residents.
  • Improved quality of life: Redevelopment can improve the quality of life for residents by making the area more attractive and livable by creating new parks, green spaces, and other amenities.
